[Jian Zhan]

Jianzhan is a type of Chinese ceramic tea bowl that originated from the Jianyang region in Fujian province during the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE). It is famous for its dark, thick glaze and distinctive hare’s fur, oil spot, or partridge feather patterns, which are the result of natural iron oxide crystallization during high-temperature firing.

Key Features :

· Dark glaze: The iron-rich clay and glaze produce a deep black or brownish-black base, perfect for showcasing the white froth of whisked tea in the Song Dynasty tea ceremony.

· Unique Patterns:
  · Hare’s fur  – fine, streaky lines.
  · Oil spot –like drops of oil on water
  · Partridge feather – speckled patterns.

· Thick Body: Jian Zhan bowls are heavy and durable, designed to retain heat for tea preparation.
· Yōhen: A rare and highly prized iridescent glaze that creates a starry, halo-like effect, known as "Yohen Tenmoku" in Japan.

·flavoring:the iron in the clay subtly softens the water, enhancing the sweetness and texture of the tea .

Cultural Significance:

Jian Zhan was highly valued by Song Dynasty emperors, scholars, and monks, especially for the tea competition culture. Later, it became a treasure in Japanese tea ceremonies, where it is known as Tenmoku. Today, traditional Jian Zhan craftsmanship is recognized as a Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage, and modern artisans continue to revive and innovate these ancient techniques.
